Revolutionizing SEND Support

The Lewis Teaching Method

FlipFlash Learning: Revolutionizing SEND Support.

The FlipFlash Learning Board and the Lewis Teaching Method address core cognitive barriers by offloading "mental heavy lifting" onto a physical, structured system. By utilizing dual coding and tactile manipulation, we shift the learning process from abstract thinking to concrete building.

1. Supporting Dyslexia: Building the Phonological Bridge

For dyslexic students, the "bottleneck" between hearing a sound and retrieving its visual symbol can be a constant hurdle.

  • Multisensory Encoding: Using magnetic tiles for blends and spellings allows students to feel the structure of a word. Physically moving a "ch" or "str" tile cements phonics in a way paper cannot.
  • Reducing "Blank Page Syndrome": By building responses card-by-card, the board removes writing anxiety. Students focus on one KICK word (Key Information-Carrying Word) at a time, preventing the cognitive overload that leads to spelling fatigue.
  • Visual Consistency: Dual-coded cards (image on one side, word on the other) provide a constant "safety net." The image aids word retrieval, while the word reinforces the visual map.

2. Supporting ADHD: Managing "Air Traffic Control"

Students with ADHD often struggle with working memory (holding info) and task initiation (starting).

  • Externalizing Working Memory: The board acts as an "external brain." Instead of juggling five ideas in their head, five cards in a row hold the ideas for them, freeing mental energy for expression.
  • Gamified Repetition: The physical act of "flipping" cards and the app-based reinforcement provide the quick feedback loops the ADHD brain craves.
  • Structure through Rows: The five-card limit per row provides a clear, visual "finish line," helping students overcome time blindness and see exactly how much work remains.

3. Supporting ASC (Autism): Predictability and Logic

For students on the autistic spectrum, the Lewis method provides essential filtering and structure in a chaotic world.

  • Identifying KICK Words: By focusing on KICK words, students can filter out "social noise" or filler language and focus on the essential facts of a lesson.
  • Visualizing the Daily Schedule: The board serves as a powerful tool for predictability. Students can place cards on their boards to map out their activities for a lesson. Seeing the sequence of tasks visually reduces transition anxiety and helps them plan their energy.
  • Digital Continuity: The transition from the physical board to the digital app creates a "bridge" between  school and home, maintaining a consistent visual structure that reduces stress.

4. Student-Centred Goal Setting

The FlipFlash system moves beyond academics into personal development.

  • Visualizing Targets: The board provides a meaningful, tactile approach to personal goal setting. Students can use cards to represent their targets, making abstract growth concepts visible and "touchable."
  • Active Review: Using the "flip" functionality, students can review their progress in a way that feels like a personal win, fostering a sense of agency and ownership over their own learning journey.

Summary of Equity and Access

The FlipFlash system creates equity by providing all students with the same "starting line." We don't lower expectations; we simply change the tools used to reach the destination.

Feature

Student Benefit

KICK Words - Distills complex instructions into Key Information-Carrying Words.

Visual Scheduling - Provides a clear "roadmap" of the lesson, reducing   ASC-related anxiety.

Dual Coding - Bridges the gap between abstract concepts and visual memory.

Magnetic Tiles - Encourages "trial and error" without the stigma of eraser   marks.

Goal Setting - Transforms targets into a student-led, tactile experience.
